スタンフォード大学 (Stanford University) で「Stanford e-Japan Program」 のプログラムマネージャーを務めるWaka Takahashi Brownさんは、25年以上の教育者としてのキャリアの中で、紙からデジタルへ、対面からオンラインへと移り変わる現場を見てきました。テクノロジーの進化が寄与するのは「学びやすさ」であり、「学び続ける意思」を点火するのは、いつの時代も学習者自身なのです。
My career in education began over 25 years ago when I first taught at a high school in California. At that time, I did not use many computer-based resources in my classroom. Students turned homework in on sheets of paper, which I graded by hand and returned to them every day. While students did communicate with me via email at times, they mostly talked with me in class or during breaks. After that initial teaching assignment, I changed positions, so my work mainly entailed writing curriculum instead. After several years, however, I once again was tasked with teaching, but this time in an online format.
While I had my initial doubts about how well students would learn without an actual class to physically attend several times a week, I quickly realized that an online education could benefit students in ways that would be difficult with in-person schooling. For instance, students in my first distance-learning class were from many different parts of the country. While we were not able to meet every day, the ease at which we could gather online once a week and exchange ideas was very meaningful. If I had tried to gather these same students in person, it would have been logistically challenging and prohibitively expensive. However, with our online platform, it was convenient and completely free of charge. In-person schooling certainly has some advantages, but the quality of education in both formats depends on students’ internal motivation. In person and online, I am not able to stand over a student to make sure they complete their work or are engaged with it. If the student’s intrinsic motivation is there, both in-person and online formats for learning has proved to be quite effective.
In addition, since my first distance-learning course, technology has evolved so that virtual classes have many functions that enhance students’ experiences and learning. Small discussion groups are formed with ease, and engaging in and monitoring them is much easier than with an in-person class. The audio and video quality for real-time virtual classes has improved significantly as well. Students can raise “virtual hands,” and also share presentations with each other at a click of a button. The benefits of online schooling will no doubt increase as new improvements and methods are discovered.

さらに、私が最初に遠隔授業を行って以来、技術は進歩し、「バーチャル・クラスルーム」には生徒の体験と学びを高める多くの機能が備わるようになりました。小グループでのディスカッションは容易に編成でき、参加やモニタリングも対面授業よりはるかに簡単です。リアルタイムのオンライン授業における音声・映像の品質も大幅に向上しました。生徒は「バーチャル挙手」ができ、ボタン一つで互いにプレゼンテーションを共有することも可能です。新たな改良や方法が見つかるにつれて、オンライン教育の利点は今後さらに増していくに違いありません。
